In the historic village of Sant'Ilario dello Ionio, nestled among the hills of the Locride region and overlooking the Ionian Sea, lies a small jewel of memory and culture: the Museum of Rural Civilisation. This museum space represents a real journey through time, to discover the rural life of Calabria in the past, its trades and labours, but also its extraordinary cultural wealth. The museum is housed in a historic building in the centre of the village, and was created with the aim of preserving and enhancing the objects, tools and stories linked to the rural and artisan world of the area. Here you will find agricultural tools, utensils for processing grain, wine and oil, as well as tools for domestic use, traditional clothing and period photographs, all coming from donations by the townspeople themselves.
Visiting the Museum of Rural Civilisation in Sant'Ilario is not only an opportunity to see ancient objects up close, but above all to immerse oneself in a world that has shaped local identity. The exhibition itinerary, enriched by detailed explanations and oral accounts, allows visitors to fully understand the habits, rhythms and values of a peasant society that has now disappeared, but is still present in the collective memory.
The Museum of Rural Life in Sant'Ilario dello Ionio is more than a museum: it is a bridge between past and present, a place where local history comes to life and is passed on to new generations. An invitation to rediscover one's roots, to learn about the value of work and community, and to bring the best of our past into the future.
