Church of Sant'Ilarione Abate

Where art and faith recount four centuries of devotion.

In the heart of Sant'Ilario dello Ionio stands the Church of Sant'Ilarione Abate, a treasure trove of sacred art and guardian of a devotion that spans the centuries. Its origins date back to 1593, when it was built with a single nave; over time, the community made it grow and enrich it, until it was given its present form with three naves, completed at the end of the 19th century.

Once adorned with seven altars, today it has three, witnesses of a liturgical tradition that has left indelible marks. The dome above the high altar, with depictions of the theological virtues, and the walls decorated with the twelve Apostles are examples of 18th-century artistry that still excite the visitor's eye. Among the most unusual objects is the 'trocca', an ancient wooden instrument that once accompanied the Good Friday rites, marking the rhythm of popular faith.

To cross the threshold of this church is to beenveloped in a story that weaves spirituality, art and identity. Here, every stone, fresco and symbol speaks of the deep bond between the village and its patron saint, making the Church of Sant'Ilarione Abate not only a place of prayer, but a spiritual heart of the community.
